Jail tells the story of Parag Dixit(Neil) who is having a peaceful life with his wife, played by Mugdha Godse. But his life takes a turn and he ends up in jail due to some unfortunate events. The film is a take on the cruel realities faced by prisoners in Indian jails by focusing on Parag's life in the jail. It is rumored that Neil will appear complete nude in a torturing scene. Manoj Bajpai plays another inmate in the jail.
Madhur Bhandarkar told about his new venture that,JAIL is based on the under-trials and as the name suggests, it is the baseline of my film. I dont think a prison story like JAIL has been done so far in Hindi Cinema. I always want to go into genres that are new to be explored. But there were too many practical problems. It'll be in the thriller format. I've been mulling the subject right from the time I made Chandni Bar. Now I've completely revamped the film. The shooting of the film has already been started.

The filming started in the summer of 2008. All the actors of the film have undergone deep-sea Scuba diving training in Bangkok. Lara Dutta, who plays an underwater diver, didn't know how to swim earlier. She says "When I was offered 'Blue', I was a little skeptical but then thought it is now or never. I swim like a fish today, and am an expert in diving". One of the posters of the film shows her wearing a bikini.

Akshay Kumar, a certified deep sea diver, was injured while shooting for the film. The shot required Kumar to be 75ft deep in water, surrounded by 35 sharks. Kumar hit his head against the shipwreck and started bleeding, a lot of sharks reached there after getting the smell of his blood. Seeing this, the entire crew and cast members dove into the sea and surrounded him. He came out safe and was immediately rushed to hospital for first aid.[5]
